The champion of Russian Song, baritone Sergei Leiferkus, will be joined by a young star of the Bolshoi Theatre, mezzo soprano Anna Viktorova, and by the National Youth Choir of the Netherlands (patron Sir Simon Rattle) in the most versatile song repertoire by Sergei Rachmaninov. Melancholic male songs alternate with dreamy female songs, a duet, a canon, choirsongs and - of course - the well-known vocalise!

As famous are his Petrushka and Sacre du Printemps, so little known are Stravinsky's songs. Written for singers of all ages, the songs are mnemonics, about dragons, counting, nonsense and ... a bear. Some are shorter than a minute, sung in Russian and Dutch (in a special translation by Jan Rot).
Stravinsky, as Russian émigré and at home in the cities of Paris and New York, has his roots in the music of Tchaikovsky and Glinka. From these we also hear romantic cello pieces, and lose ourselves in our dreams ...

Leonard Bernstein, the world-famous conductor and composer, knew how to incorporate American jazz music into the European classical tradition. In this programme the Spotlight is directed on his songs. A 'Songfest' performed by the best, most spirited American and Dutch singers with Reinild Mees commenting from at the piano, as Bernstein did himself in his television shows during the sixties. Instrumental interludes for trumpet and piano.

Highly virtuoso soprano Marlis Petersen jumps from one role into another in this programme. After Gretchen (from 'Faust') she appears as Klärchen (from 'Egmont'), Mignon and Philine (from 'Wilhelm Meister') and Stella, to mention just a few of the female characters from Goethe's theatre plays who, often in a humouristic way, try to comment the meaning of life. Songs by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Franz Liszt, Ernst Krenek, Nikolai Medtner, Alexander von Zemlinsky and others.
